Atlanta - Powerline carrier technology is no longer just for cooperatives. The rise of automated meter reading (AMR) vendor Distribution Control Systems Inc. (DCSI) is testimony to that, as the Hazelwood, Mo.-based vendor has used its two-way powerline technology to grab an estimated 10% of the AMR market, according to a new report from Chartwell Inc.
By garnering a sizeable share of the largest network AMR installations announced in recent years, DCSI has vaulted into third in estimated marketshare behind leaders Itron and SchlumbergerSema, according to The Chartwell AMR Report 2002, 7th Edition. Itron, the long-time industry leader, maintains an estimated 54% of the AMR market while SchlumbergerSema has about 28%, according to the report.
In addition to market analysis, The Chartwell AMR Report 2002 offers the latest trends surrounding utility management strategies and technology implementation regarding AMR. Industry analysis and the majority of conclusions made in the report are derived from data compiled through Chartwell’s exclusive industry survey, the only survey of its kind that examines the AMR industry from utilities’ perspective.
Chartwell surveyed 115 utility executives and managers at random via telephone in late July and August 2002.
The surveys also indicate that utilities are incorporating AMR into their plans at a slow and steady rate. The number of utilities using or at least considering AMR has increased from 85% to 96% over the past four years, according to recent Chartwell surveys. This includes utilities using, testing, planning or considering the technology.
Indeed, most utilities see some need for AMR, whether for a full deployment or for niche applications, such as hard-to-read and commercial/industrial meters.
