New Chartwell report examines utilities’ meter data management strategies

New Chartwell report examines utilities’ meter data management strategies

ATLANTA – One of the most crucial areas of technology where utilities can achieve the maximum potential from their advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and back-end systems is an enterprise-wide meter data management system (MDMS). Yet, according to Chartwell’s latest research on the subject, most utilities have yet to deploy a fully-functional system.

In its newest report, Meter Data Management: Analysis, Case Studies & Vendor Profiles, Chartwell aims to answer several questions surrounding this software, including:

  • How does meter data management correlate to AMI?
  • Do some utilities view this technology as a necessity to their AMI investments?
  • What do utilities want to accomplish in implementing a MDMS?
  • What strategies have some utilities adopted in regard to MDMS?
  • Which MDMS vendors are utilities using?

“Many of the utilities we talk to that are in the process of implementing AMI are putting in MDMS first. They believe that central data management is the key to leveraging advanced benefits from their metering investment,” says Mark Hall, metering analyst for Chartwell.

Additionally, this report contains case study profiles of three utilities – Pacific Gas & Electric, Portland General Electric and DTE Energy – all set begin large full-scale AMI rollouts in the near-future. These utilities are, or have, implemented a central MDMS in anticipation of their meter projects.

According to industry sources and examination of its own data, Chartwell finds that MDMS and AMI go hand-in-hand, which is presented in the report. Based on its 2006 survey of 106 electric, gas and water utilities of various ownership structures – investor-owned, public-owned and member-owned – Chartwell examines which utilities are likely to be using a MDMS and for what reason.

Meter Data Management: Analysis, Case Studies & Vendor Profiles also examines utilities by service offering and ownership structure to see which utilities are leading the way in implementing MDMS.

Meter Data Management: Analysis, Case Studies & Vendor Profiles contains information on six MDMS vendors. The report is available for $795.
