Customers catching on to utility energy efficiency efforts, Chartwell research shows
ATLANTA – Utilities are promoting energy efficiency programs more effectively and customers are jumping on the bandwagon, according to recent Chartwell research. Compared to other products and services they offer, utilities rank energy efficiency programs as most successful in terms of meeting goals and most popular in terms of numbers of enrollments.
Utilities now offer residential customers energy audits and energy efficiency rebates more than any other product or service Chartwell asked about on its annual utility survey. Residential customer participation rates in online audits jumped from 1.1% in 2006 to 2.3% in 2007. Participation in in-home audits increased as well – from 0.29% to 0.71%, according to data derived from the survey.
The study shows that commercial and industrial (C&I) customers are taking advantage of utility rebates on energy efficient upgrades in greater numbers, and utilities are paying out more in rebates to these customers.
The survey findings – based on interviews with 117 investor-, government- and cooperatively owned electricity and gas providers in North America – are described and analyzed in Chartwell’s latest reports as part of its Products, Services & Programs Research Series.
The reports discuss the rates at which utilities offer or plan to offer 37 products/services such as online bill analysis, load management, green energy, solar system rebates, maintenance agreements and more. They also examine participation rates, prices, market research and other issues.
Chartwell has been conducting utility surveys regarding products, services and programs since 1997, allowing Chartwell analysts to report on trends in the growth or decline of various products and services. Also available are sortable data sheets of survey responses.
