Utilities are 'wide-open' to many advanced metering technologies

Utilities are ‘wide-open’ to many advanced metering technologies

ATLANTA – March 20, 2008 – Utilities with more than 500,000 customers are giving similar consideration to several automated meter reading (AMR) and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technologies, according to Chartwell’s latest report, AMR Vendors & Technologies 2008. However, this trend is not exclusive to large utilities.

“On a macro scale, the latest survey shows that despite a few committed industry segments, such as cooperatives with wired power line communications or BPL with larger IOUs, utilities of various ownerships, size and commodity structures are wide-open to multiple advanced metering technologies,” says Mark Hall, research analyst for Chartwell’s Metering Research Series.

These are among the many key findings identified in AMR Vendors & Technologies 2008. The report is a recurring publication, based on Chartwell’s exclusive annual survey of more than 100 North American utilities.

AMR Vendors & Technologies 2008 also includes Chartwell’s latest data on other AMR and AMI communications technologies, including forms of fixed radio, power line carrier, mobile and BPL. Data and analysis is broken down by commodity, utility size and utility ownership.

In the report, Chartwell also tracks and analyzes many of the industry’s leading AMR and AMI vendors, as well as those poised to make an impact, based on utility responses and industry observations. Included is an AMR vendor market share estimate; detailed assessments of the AMR and AMI vendors; and the latest unit shipments of some selected companies.

AMR Vendors & Technologies 2008 includes 62 pages of Chartwell analysis and profiles of 15 AMR and AMI technology vendors.
