Natural gas utilities appealing to customers' need for comfort through energy efficiency, new Chartwell report reveals

ATLANTA – May 12, 2010 – Twelve percent of gas or gas/electric combination utilities now operate under decoupled rates, according to Chartwell utility industry research; but with or without decoupling, natural gas energy efficiency programs are growing in size and number nationwide. From low-income weatherization to whole-house programs, gas utilities face many of the same opportunities and obstacles as electric utilities; but, there are many differences as well. Natural gas use is more seasonal, so proper timing of energy efficiency program implementation and marketing is more crucial. In addition, natural gas energy efficiency programs often rely on “bigger-ticket” items that are top of mind with the average consumer only every 10 years or so.

These are some of the conclusions drawn from the nine utility case studies featured in Natural Gas Energy Efficiency Programs, the latest Chartwell report. The report’s in-depth case studies provide details into the workings of energy efficiency programs at Vermont Gas, Bay State Gas, New Jersey Natural Gas, Pacific Gas & Electric, and more. The report outlines effective strategies and learnings from these organizations and others. For example, some utilities have found that appealing to customers’ desire for comfort in their homes is more effective than environmental or money-saving messages.
