ATLANTA - Integrating automated meter reading systems with customer information and other systems can help utilities save hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars, exactly how is revealed in a new report from energy research leader Chartwell Inc.
When done properly, integration can increase overall operating efficiency, generate additional revenue and improve customer service, states the report, Strategies for Integrating AMR, CIS and Other Systems. Because of the increasing importance of timely data, utilities rely more than ever on their meter managers. These professionals are becoming known as "energy information managers" because they hold the keys to meter data that provides insight into improving efficiency of various utility departments.
Strategies for Integrating AMR, CIS and Other Systems describes the keys to successful integration and the assimilation approaches taken by 20 utilities, culled from Chartwell interviews from the past four years. The 35-page report features two chapters of analysis, plus five case studies, including one illustrating how KCP&L recovered more than $1 million in lost or "missed" revenue over a one-year span through a sophisticated integration of CIS, field operations and AMR. Another case study explains how Minnesota Power integrated its AMR system with its CIS to improve billing accuracy and save significant amounts of money related to estimated reads, staffing and vehicle maintenance.
Chartwell’s Strategies for Integrating AMR, CIS and Other Systems, which is available for $350, is part of Chartwell’s Metering Research Series, the only unbiased monthly publication devoted exclusively to the AMR industry.
