Chartwell's Webinar on Utility Renewable Energy Programs
Wednesday, March 31, 2010
2:00 - 3:30 PM ET
REGISTER >>

This Chartwell webinar will spotlight several successful renewable energy programs offered by North American utility organizations. What efforts around launching a renewable energy program are successful, and what lessons were learned in the process. Presenters will discuss from program development and program implementation, marketing and promotion, and customer acceptance.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • How do the nation’s top-selling utilities market green power to residential customers? What are the best way to broach the subjects of kilowatt hours; generation, transmission and distribution; and other aspects of renewable energy that consumers may find confusing?
  • How do utilities market green power to commercial and industrial customers? What messages, price points and benefits are important to them? What is the benefit to the utility to market green power to these customers?
  • How do utilities charge for green power?
  • Does the power mix really matter to the public? Is it beneficial to have different types of renewable energy offerings?
  • What infrastructure needs to be in place at the utility in order to offer green power?
  • How did customers embrace the program? What was the adoption? Many electric utilities today offer energy generated from renewable or “green” sources. In some cases, governmental mandates require them to do so; in other cases, utility leaders believe their customers want a green power option. This webinar will offer insights from some of the best and most successful programs.

  • Presenters
Thor Hinckley, Manager, Renewable Power Program, Portland General Electric
Thor has been with Portland General Electric since October 2000 and was responsible for the development of PGE’s Commercial and Industrial Green Power program in 2003. Thor is currently project manager for the development of PGE’s new Stable Rate renewable power product. Thor’s responsibilities also include the marketing of Green Energy to all PGE customers. As of July 13, 2005 these programs have approximately 37,000 residential and over 600 business customers and is ranked as the # 2 utility for sales of renewable power and #3 for total number of enrolled customers by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Labs.

Carol Harwell, GreenChoice Manager, Austin Energy
Harwell came to Austin Energy in 2000 as a product developer for renewable energy and energy efficiency products. Some of Harwell’s first tasks at the utility were to develop the operational strategies, tools and cross-departmental team necessary for the smooth implementation and running of the program. She became manager of GreenChoice in 2003. GreenChoice has been number one in kWh sales for seven years straight among 800 other voluntary utility renewable energy sales programs ranked by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Harwell also manages the renewable energy credit and REC aggregator functions of the GreenChoice and Solar Rebate programs.
