More utilities implementing meter data management systems, Chartwell report finds

ATLANTA – Aug. 18, 2010 – More North American utilities are investing in meter data management systems (MDMS) to improve the functionality of their advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), according to new Chartwell survey data.

Chartwell surveyed 130 North American electric, gas and water utilities, and also identified more than 60 MDMS installations since 2001 from an array of vendors. Through its research, Chartwell reports on the industry leaders in MDMS in addition to the companies that are unveiling new MDMS products.

Billing and customer information systems remain the central meter data repositories, but more utilities are attempting to harvest the wealth of data made available by their smart grid-related technologies by investing in MDMS.

“There’s all this data out there sitting on a shelf, and more utilities have determined they need MDMS to benefit from that data,” Chartwell research analyst Darren Epps said. “Vendors are making it easier by developing products that can be integrated more easily into existing systems. Utilities are telling Chartwell that they expect to reap future benefits.”

Chartwell’s report also includes updates on 16 MDMS vendors serving nearly 100 million combined endpoints.
