Mesh AMI, Zigbee HANs top utility choices for smart metering

ATLANTA - Mesh radio is emerging as the most used and sought after smart metering communications technology. Forty-two percent of utilities say they are using, planning or considering mesh metering systems, according to one of Chartwell’s latest reports, Smart Metering Technology.

Still, Chartwell’s research shows that non-mesh radio communications are drawing wide interest from utilities looking to implement smart meters, such as tower-based networks.

“Most of the larger contracts that have been announced within the last two years have involved mesh or tower-based networks, so it supports our findings,” says Mark Hall, research analyst for Chartwell.

Primary smart metering communications networks, home area networks (HANs) and data network backhauls also are evaluated in Smart Metering Technology. For example, more than 40% of electric utilities prefer Zigbee compared to other in-premise standards, according to the report.

In addition, the report also contains data trends and analysis pertaining to factors that drive smart metering technology decisions and how utilities rank several business case benefits, such as customer service/satisfaction, more accurate billing, revenue protection and load curtailment.

Data presented in Smart Metering Technology is based on Chartwell’s 2008 survey of 103 North American utilities. Chartwell interviews more than 100 metering and smart grid officials at utilities annually to effectively gauge the industry.

Smart Metering Technology is available for purchase at $595. It is part of Chartwell’s Smart Grid Research Series, which covers many of the technologies relating to the smart grid, including smart meters, HANs, demand response, advanced utility applications and data management software.
