AMR Installation Best Practices

Utilities deploy different tactics to streamline AMR installations and increase return on investment, Chartwell reports

ATLANTA – Utilities rely on both inhouse and outsourced labor deployment to get their automated meter reading (AMR) systems in place and operational, but the most efficient methodology may to be to include a mixture of both, according to a new industry report by Chartwell Inc.

In AMR Installation Best Practices, released today, Chartwell details a handful of utilities that use both inhouse and outsourced personnel, as well as a combination of the two, as they work toward the most efficient and speedy installation possible of their AMR systems. Realizing a speedy installation can allow a utility to begin reaping the cost benefits of AMR, namely faster meter reads and reduced costs per read.

AMR systems allow utilities to monitor electricity, gas or water meters with various communications devices, either remotely or from vehicles, eliminating the need for the meter reader to approach the meter. Based on Chartwell’s ongoing coverage of the utility industry, this new report includes common threads from the installation initiatives of utilities that have installed AMR units en masse. AMR Installation Best Practices also includes advice from noted industry experts and case studies on the Washington, D.C. Water and Sewer Authority and Philadelphia Suburban Water.

The 26-page AMR Installation Best Practices, available for $250, also includes profiles of seven AMR installation providers, and an industry analysis. The report is part of the AMR Research Series, a twice-monthly publication covering the automated metering reading industry. Membership in The Chartwell Metering Research Series is available for $2,995.
